Wallace Monument, Stirling - Week 1 Complete

Today we start our second week of electrical work associated with the refurbishment at The National Wallace Monument in Stirling.

Our electricians assigned to this job put in a fantastic effort during the first week removing all of the old storage heating from the building as well as installing half of the new storage heating and yes that meant walking up and down the monument many many times with heater bricks.

Another couple of days this week of brick carrying and heater installation will see the bulk of the new heater work complete as we then move on to working alongside the shop fitting company installing the new exhibitions.

Helping The Next Generation

This week we have had a young lad working with us on work experience and he has shown good timekeeping and attitude skills and we will invite him for more work experience during the year if he wishes to do take us up on the offer.

We usually employ apprentices every other year and we will be having more work experience opportunities that not only helps out the next generation in gaining "real world" experience it also helps us get to know youngsters before we seriously consider taking them on for apprenticeships.

Hair Straighteners - Turn Them Off, Put Them Away

Below is a message and video from the Electrical Safety Council highlighting the care needed when using Hair Straighteners.

Hair straighteners, and other electrical beauty products, are seen by many as an essential. But they can be very dangerous, particularly to children.

Straighteners can reach temperatures of over 220°C and then take up to forty minutes to cool down after use. They can cause severe burns if they touch the skin, with children particularly vulnerable as their skin can be 15 times thinner than adults.

The number of hair straightener burns among children has doubled in recent years and they now account for nearly one in ten burns. The majority of these incidents are when toddlers touch, grab or tread on the hot hair straightener plates. Nearly half of all adults have also received a burn from a heated hair appliance.

Turn them off. Put them away.

Keep your children safe

If you use hair straighteners, follow our top tips to make sure that you, and your children, stay safe from electrical burns:

Keep hair straighteners out of reach of children
Children’s skin can be 15 times thinner than that of adults so it’s important to keep them out of reach of little feet and hands.
Use a heat proof pouch
Hair straighteners stay hot up to forty minutes after they have been switched off. A heat proof pouch is the easiest and safest way to store a product after use.
Keep them away from skin
Do not allow the any of the hot plates to come into contact with the face, neck or scalp when using straighteners.
Seek medical attention
In the incident of a serious burn, seek immediate medical attention. If the hot plates comes into contact with the skin but it is not serious, run the affected area under cold water.

Historic Electrical Work Begins

Today we start electrical work on the refurbishment of The National Wallace Monument in Stirling.

For nearly 20 years we have carried out work at this famous historic worldwide landmark and it is a privilege to be involved in this latest refurbishment which will see new displays and features on each of the floor galleries as well as improved lighting and heating.

The Legends Coffee House and the new Gift Shop in the Reception Centre based at the car park will remain open as normal. The Monument will reopen on 5th April 2014.

We recently installed a new electrical supply to a household garage as well as installing sockets and lights within the garage and it was pleasing yesterday to receive the below feedback from the customer.

"Absolutely thrilled with everything! The young lady on the phone was always polite, friendly and professional, as were the two young men who carried out the work. They arrived on time, worked quickly and efficiently and everything was left clean and tidy. I apologise for not knowing their names, as I cannot recommend them highly enough and will definitely use SES again."
